Below is a transcript from a long session I had with ChatGPT where I get recipes for, initially, Orange Beef for which I suddenly had a craving. It was impossible to get a decent version here in Brockville, so if I wanted to have it, I was going to have to make it myself. I wanted to have it, so I *did* make it myself. I had what I thought was good success with that, and so I proceeded to get a bunch of recipes for Orange Beef, Stir-Fried Bok Choy with Garlic, Crispy Lemon Chicken, General Tao Chicken, Chow Mein, Singapore Noodles, Almond Cookies, Chicken Fried Rice, and Broccoli Beef. I posted the Broccoli Beef recipe here: https://brockvillerecipes.blogspot.com/2024/06/broccoli-beef.html

I made most of the Recipes. The ones I liked the best were

Chow Mein -- This was the one that I had the least confidence in and almost didn't make, but it turned out to be the best of the lot.

Orange Beef -- This turned out exactly as I had wanted. It absolutely scratched that itch.

The rest were fine, but the Chow Mein and the Orange Beef were extraordinary.

Lemon Chicken -- This was not bad, but not as good as I expected.

Stir-Fried Bok Choy with Garlic -- Turned out as you would expect -- tasty, but not amazing like the Chow Mein.

General Tao Chicken -- this was fine, but something of a disappointment because I have had some truly amazing General Tao Chicken in my time.

Singapore Noodles -- I did not make them this time, but my recipe turns out some pretty nice Singapore Noodles, which I have made and enjoyed a few times. That recipe was something I invented myself but it was done for the same reason as the Orange Beef. I really wanted Singapore Noodles and the ones available in town are not nearly as good as mine.

Broccoli Beef -- Greatly enjoyed this one and was confident enough to put the recipe online.

Almond Cookies -- I can't remember if I even made these! I will post online separately if/when I do.

Chicken Fried Rice -- I also can't remember if I made this. I'm not a huge fan of Chicken Fried Rice, so (a) probably didn't make it or (b) it was not either bad enough or good enough to remember.

Well, this is going on for a while... The reason I am putting this post up is to demonstrate the substantial abilities of ChatGPT when it comes to getting a recipe. It's as easy as just typing in 'Orange Beef' and it will give you the recipe. Deep in the text here I ask for shopping lists for the various things and it obliges, so that's a real 'nice to have'.

How long does it take to make wonton wrappers?
ChatGPT said:
ChatGPT

Making wonton wrappers from scratch typically takes around 30-45 minutes. Here is a basic recipe:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup water
  • Cornstarch for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, mix flour and salt.
    • Create a well in the center and add the egg and water.
    • Mix until a dough forms. If it's too dry, add more water, a little at a time.
  2. Knead the Dough:

    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Roll Out the Dough:

    • Divide the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece into a thin sheet (about 1/16 inch thick).
    • Cut into 3.5-inch squares.
  4. Dust and Store:

    • Dust each wrapper with cornstarch to prevent sticking.
    • Use immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the refrigerator.

Making wonton wrappers from scratch allows for fresher and possibly better-tasting wontons, though it does require some time and effort.
